You’re drawn to unusual faces, complicated characters, dramatic details, and things that can be beautiful without being pretty. You like art with a little tension in it, something that makes you look twice because you haven’t quite figured it out yet.
Few performers have occupied the strange, imaginative worlds I love quite like Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). Her screen presence can be theatrical, eccentric, unsettling, tender, or several of those things at once.
That’s what interests me as a painter: the space between what we see and what we sense. The carefully constructed persona.
